Roger Hawkes graduated from the University of Washington in 1968 with a degree in Business Administration and in 1973 with his Juris Doctor degree. In between, he worked as a Certified Public Accountant.

After law school, he worked for a trial court judge for a year and thereafter started Hawkes Law Firm. He has been a member of the Shoreline School Board, the Board of the Washington State Trial Lawyers Association, and has served as a judge or arbitrator many times.
