Gavin West

A large part of Gavin’s practice focuses on helping families to preserve, manage, and transfer their assets and wealth from one generation to the next.  This type of work brings together various financial, legal, and tax principles in ways he finds fascinating.  His typical workday includes estate planning, probate, writing and interpreting wills and trusts and other elder law issues, such as dealing with powers of attorney and health care directives.  Gavin has been interested in this type of work since he was in school, and is thrilled to have a law practice that allows him to help so many people with complex and important areas of their lives.

Gavin attended law school at Gonzaga University School of Law in Spokane, Washington. Prior to this, he earned a degree in Accounting, graduating magna cum laude, from Weber State University in Ogden, Utah.  Gavin then went on to earn a Masters of Law in Taxation, commonly called a Tax LL.M, from the University of Washington, which normally entails a year of full-time tax law and related classes. While at UW, he focused on estate planning and business taxation and planning.  That expertise is essential for lawyers intent on helping clients to navigate the complex possibilities of retaining considerable wealth for family or charitable use after the owner has passed away.

In addition to his law practice, Gavin enjoys spending time with his wife and three young children, and is often found either at the side of a soccer field watching his oldest son, at a playground with the younger two, or at the Woodland Park Zoo with the entire family. He also volunteers extensively in various capacities with his church and related community organizations, often with one or more of his children in tow.  Gavin’s various service activities have allowed him to work with people in all walks of life and from many different cultures, and have taken him as far as Scotland and the little-known Shetland Islands.  When he can squeeze it in, Gavin also enjoys a little snowboarding, water sports, fly fishing, and other outdoor activities.
