Susan Teel, Estate Planning Attorney

Susan M. Teel grew up in Northern California, graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles with a B.S. in English and Speech, and received her law degree from San Francisco Law School.

After working for an International Bank Trust Department in San Francisco during and after graduation from law school, she earned an LL.M in Taxation from Golden Gate University in San Francisco.

She was an associate and partner in various law firms in the Bay Area and in Bowling Green Kentucky, prior to moving to Seattle to join family in 2007.

Once in Seattle, she worked for a major Seattle law firm, and for Moss Adams, LLP as Senior Tax Manager handling Estate Tax and Trust matters. In 2011 she started her own firm and joined Hawkes Law Firm as ‘Of Counsel’ in 2015 to manage the Trusts and Estates division.

She lives in Mill Creek and balances work with family (including her husband, 2 sons and 3 live-wire grandchildren), cooking, outdoor activities – hiking, snow shoeing and kayaking — reading, travel and a love of marine biology.

Professional Bio

Susan has practiced tax law and estate planning, trust and probate law for more than three decades. As a tax lawyer she represents taxpayers before the IRS in business, personal income tax, and estates and trust tax disputes and has defended estate and gift tax returns for large estates.

Her estate planning practice includes preparation of simple as well as complex estate plans, from working with clients to create a basic family gifting plan to planning for single persons, professionals and corporate executives, developing succession plans for business owners and assisting families with elder law planning.

She also handles all aspects of probate and trust administration, guardianships, and estate and trust litigation. Susan has extensive experience with charitable gifting, life insurance planning, and structuring special needs trusts and incorporates these strategies in her client planning.

Susan is licensed to practice law in Washington and California, and frequently represents clients with interests in both jurisdictions, particularly with real estate and tax matters. She represents clients before the U.S. Tax Court, and the State Courts of Washington and California.

Susan has been an active member of the Washington State Bar since 2007 and is a member of the King County and Snohomish County Bar Associations and Washington Women in Tax. She is a member of the Seattle Estate Planning Council, and the Washington, King County and California State Bar Sections on

Tax Law, and Real Property, Trust and Probate. Throughout her career, she has been a writer and lecturer for various professional publications and organizations, and has served as a Trustee of the Bellevue Art Museum, and a Board Member of the Sonoma County Humane Society and Rotary Club of Santa Rosa.

Susan is presently a Member of the Snohomish County Council on Aging, representing the interests of seniors in Snohomish and King Counties.

Susan’s passion and practice is working with clients to find solutions to estate, tax and business planning issues, whether simple or complex, with dignity, efficiency and professionalism.
